Astrantia ‘Claret’ is a pretty perennial with rich, deep, ruby red pincushion-like flower heads which are held on wiry stems above mid-green, deeply cut, palmate foliage throughout the summer. This is one of the darkest flowered Astrantias with a ruff of longer bracts than many other varieties. Although they an old cottage garden favourite, Astrantia work equally well in contemporary-style plantings. Use towards the front of a sunny, reliably moist border, where the flower colour can be fully appreciated. Also makes a great cut flower and is loved by bees & butterflies so it is on the RHS Perfect for Pollinators list. After flowering, Astrantias can be rejuvenated by cutting them back close to the ground which will promote fresh new foliage and a late crop of flowers.
Flowers June to August.
Thrives in sun or partial shade in moist but well drained soil.
Maximum height/spread approx 90cm x 30cm.
Plants will be supplied well rooted and ready for immediate planting out. My plants are hard grown i.e. grown outside as soon as they have developed a strong enough root system to survive. This makes them stronger, healthier & more weather tolerant plants than those which have been grown on rapidly in artificial conditions in a greenhouse.
Postage & Delivery
Plants will be removed from the pot, carefully packed & then sent in secure cardboard packaging to protect them whilst in the postal system. I offer a postage discount for multiple purchases dispatched to the same address. When you buy more than one item you will pay the full postage cost for the first item only, then a discounted rate for each extra item purchased (please see 'postage and payments' tab above for full details). I use Royal Mail for small orders whilst orders over 2kg will be sent by carrier so the MAXIMUM postage you pay need only be £9.95 for any amount of plants. Highland, Island & Offshore delivery addresses may incur additional charges.
PLEASE NOTE - Plants will only be dispatched by either Royal Mail 1st Class or carrier to minimize the amount of time spent in the postal system. Plants will be dispatched by Royal Mail on the Monday to Thursday following receipt of cleared funds (to avoid plants sitting in the sorting depot over the weekend) and by carrier on the Monday to Wednesday.
