From Pearl Harbor to Cherbourg, US Navy deep sea salvage divers of WW2 were tasked with clearing sunken ships and other underwater obstacles. Learning from experience at Tarawa, the elite Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) were formed to "prep" landing beaches and clear channels for amphibious assaults. These divers were issued specially designed canvas, leather, and brass dive boots to provide ballast while completing their daunting missions. This pair of US Navy WW2 DESCO UDT DEEP SEA SALVAGE DIVER MARK V DIVE BOOTS are in good condition, missing the brass toe plate from the right boot, and with modern replacement rope laces, some drying and surface cracking to the leather instep straps and the right heel reinforcement, some scattered drying and scratching to the left heel reinforcement, some dark soiling to the left canvas upper, some scattered dark soiling to the right upper, a small frayed spot at the right toe, two spots of orangish brown soiling to the back right boot pull, some verdigris patina to the left toe plate and brass sole, some light verdigris patina to the right sole, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the boots are in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, they boast tough white canvas uppers, rugged black leather heel reinforcements and instep straps, and sturdy brass buckles, rivets, and screws throughout, sport ridged brass soles for traction, and are stamped on the front left toe plate with their maker, the famous "DESCO" (Diving Equipment and Salvage Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin). A fine example of very rare, original US Navy WW2 DESCO UDT DEEP SEA SALVAGE DIVER MARK V DIVE BOOTS. We have shown a photo of a US military deep sea diver in WW2 wearing similar Mark V dive boots. Now celebrating over 15 years on eBay.
