A private purchase flying helmet from the 1930s, plus Gosport tubes and cotton liner.

The helmet was manufactured by D. Lewis - a well-known purveyor of flying and motoring accessories. Size 7 1/3 or 7 1/8 - the stamp is difficult to read. The brown leather outer shell is in very good condition - some marks, but strong, flexible and apparently undamaged. The brow is elasticated.

The chamois liner is dry and flaky - please see the photographs. I believe it could be stabilized by application of the product known as Pecard Antique Leather Dressing. I am far from being an expert in these matters and believe restoration is a task best left to people with experience.

The very interesting cotton liner has a secondary sateen cotton lining within the crown. The elastic chin strap has plenty of stretch and snap. It has light marking and contemporary staining (chemical analysis would no doubt reveal Brylcreem and sweat!). Neither the helmet nor the liner has any offensive odours.

The Gosport tubes are in good condition and flexible. The end fitting has scratches from use.

More photographs available upon request. Your Best Offers are invited; don't be shy, but please don't be silly.
