A KSM 1 Aromatic Coffee Grinder by Reinhold Weiss for Braun AG, West Germany, 1966

 

The KSM 1 was created by Reinhold Weiss, who was deputy to Braun Design Director Dieter Rams between 1962 and 1967. 

It’s a landmark piece of Braun functionalism. The focus is on the machine’s control – a single bright red button – that echoes the austere simplicity of the cylindrical form but appears shocking against the white plastic casing. It’s also an extremely pleasing device to handle and operate.

In their book Braun 50 Jahre Produktinnovation, Bernd Polster and Olaf Meyer describe it as a “minimalist monument” and “the simplest object yet to bear the Braun logo”.

Weiss was the designer of several important Braun products - including the TFG 1 table lighter, HLD 2 hair dryer and the HL 1 and HL 70 desk fans and the Museum of Modern Art in New York has no fewer than eleven of his creations in its permanent collection.

The grinder is mains operated and has a standard European 2-pin plug. Please note that the item’s functionality has been tested on the European mains electricity supply (220 V) – others please check with an electrician local to you to confirm functionality. The wiring is original. It measures about 160 mm in height by 82 mm in diameter.

This example is in very good used condition indeed. There are a few very light surface marks here and there signifying careful use, but no significant damages. The plexiglass cover is uncommonly good - usually they become more clouded over time.

Paypal is accepted and I do not add a surcharge to cover their fees. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it's a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible for overseas customers to pay by another means such as bank transfer in GBP£ by prior arrangement.

All buyers please make contact within 3 days of auction. Payment is required within 7 days.

Non-payment

All non-paying bidders are, without exception, reported to eBay. Condition of items

Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique items and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs.

All vintage electrical items are sold as purely decorative items in original 'as found' condition without any electrical guarantee or safety guarantee whatsoever. They must always be safety checked by a qualified electrician (in the country of intended use) before use.

 

Returns

Returns are possible, if reported within 7 days and by prior arrangement, if a mistake has been made in the listing and the item is not as described, but for no other reason. I'm afraid that straightforward buyer's remorse does not qualify and that all return costs must be borne by the buyer.
